This is an injury recovery day for Runningbird. Tomorrow is the Zero Day

The very swollen foot of a trail hiker after hiking long miles on canted paved roads.

This morning it was coffee, more ice, lay back down, elevate, and more Tylenol. Then there was a strange request for cottage cheese with ketchup and cantaloupe. Sometimes I just really don't know. It was another quiet, beautiful day and we took everything slow. It was moving day to the KOA in Grants and check-in time was after 1 PM.

To kill some time we stopped at the Subway and listened to NPR. It was kinda fun parked near the Love's/Subway watching the trucks and passenger cars interact getting in and out of the facility. From there we drove through the downtown area with all the old and new shops and the huge construction project going on along the main drag replacing sewer pipes. Grants is a fairly busy town and is known for its location along Route 66. Evidently the Route 66 Centennial is coming up in 2026 and they're working to spruce things up in town and along the highway before then. It's a cool place with all the old (retro?) and new building along the roadway.

The KOA here is fairly nice with two K-9 dog areas and a nice trail meandering along lava fields on one side with signs explaining about it. The natural area between Grants and the area south (Pie Town and El Malpais National Monument) is mostly lava fields.

Alongside the KOA. You can see the lava rock and the yellow KOA signs with discriptions. The hill off to the right is called Burro Hill and is where Burros lived for a while trapped by the lava rocks. Sunset at the KOA, Grants, NM.
